NALA Homepage

NALA (the Northern Administrative Law Association) was formed in 2008 by a number of lawyers from Manchester and Liverpool who had been engaged in the campaign to secure devolution of administrative law jurisdiction to four regional centres, including Manchester, from the previously exclusive jurisdiction exercised by the Royal Courts of Justice in London. The official launch of the Administrative Court in Manchester took place on 28 January 2009. Similar Courts are being opened in Birmingham, Cardiff and Leeds.

The objectives of NALA, (which is also supported by administrative lawyers practising on the North Eastern Circuit) are

  • The development and strengthening of the practice of administrative law in the North of England, being the area covered by the Northern Circuit (including the Chester and North Wales Circuit) and the North Eastern Circuit.
  • To provide a forum for discussion of matters of common interest.
  • To ascertain and represent views of members in relation to their professional interests.
  • To protect and promote the efficiency of Courts in the North of England in dealing with administrative and public law.
  • To further the understanding and development of administrative law.
  • To develop the capacity in the North of England for the conduct of cases involving administrative law.

Membership is open to barristers, solicitors, members of the legal department of a local authority, advisers in a law centre, members of academia or any other category that the Committee may from time to time decide and who has an interest in administrative law.
